1996
These are the lyrics of the song 1996. On the way, I will mention a few things about how I interpret the song. The texts in red are said by the people who are being "parodized" (forgive me for my spelling); the texts in green are said by the one who protests against those ideas, in this case that one is Marilyn Manson. Please note that I give you MY interpretation; that doesn't have to be the right one, or the only one. My interpretation may not be what MM meant by the song (although I think it is), but it's how I interpret it. That also goes for the notes written in black; the ones on the right side of this page.
(Light a candle for the sinners
set the world on fire)
Anti-choice and
anti-girl
Anti-choice = anti-abortion
I am the anti-flag unfurled
Anti-white and anti-man
I've got the anti-future plan
Anti-fascist,
anti-mod
Mod = "hypermodern
progression"
I am the anti-music god
Anti-sober, anti-whore
There will never be enough of anti-more
I can't believe in the things
that don't believe in me
Now it's your turn
to see the
misanthropy
Misanthropy = hate against people
Anti-people now you've gone too far
Here's your antichrist superstar
Anti-money, anti-hate
anti things I fucked and ate
Anti-cop and anti-fun
Here is my anti-president gun
Anti-satan, anti-black
The anti-world is on my back
Anti-gay and anti-dope
I am the faggot anti-pope
I can't believe in the things
that don't believe in me
Now it's your turn
to see the misanthropy
Anti-people now you've gone too far
Here's your antichrist superstar
(something unintelligible)
(Fuck this! Nothing's changed!) (4x) See below for my interpretation of this
Anti-peace and anti life
anti-husband, anti-wife
anti-song and anti-me
I don't deserve a chance to be
Anti-people now you've gone
too far
Here's your antichrist superstar
My interpretation of the "fuck
this! nothing's changed!" lines: I think these lines were
added because of the title of the
song. Since the title refers to a certain year, the song could
"age." When 10 years from now someone would hear
this song for the first time in his life,
he could see it as just a 'description of the year 1996.' But
these lines imply that "nothing
has changed."
